Take the traditional idea of a bookmatch and flip it inside out. Put the live edge in the middle, and the precise edge out. That's the starting conceit of this headboard. The wood is Black Hearted Sassafrass, imported from Australia, and there you have it. Can we tell you about the smell of this wood, by the way? Spicy, sweet, seriously zingy! That's what it's like to work with. Unfortunately the smell doesn't stay with the furniture, but it's nice to know about. The headboard is joined together with a series of floating splines or tenons and variously sized Black Walnut butterfly keys. The heartwood and sapwood of the Black Walnut mimic the coloring of the Sassafrass. It's also a great way to reuse scrap pieces of Walnut. The headboard sits on feet that are composed of sliding dovetails, and the sky blue sidetable cantilevers out of the back (catalyzed lacquer finish). The drawer is made of through wedged box joints, and the bottom is scraps of wood glued together, as you can see from the photo above right. It's kind of a pleasant surprise to open the drawer and see a variety of grain and color. Finished with hand rubbed tung oil. Made in USA.
