As part of NYCxDesign, the citywide celebration of design held every spring, we decorated the lobby lounges of the Chambers Hotel with furniture, lighting, and objects from independent makers. Public rooms that guests use every day made a better showroom than any gallery.

The hotel

The Chambers Hotel, on West 56th Street steps from Fifth Avenue, was built by Gwathmey Siegel with interiors by Rockwell Group: walnut flooring, dark timber screens, paneled walls, and a double-height lobby under a mezzanine. It was known for original art on every floor, so our contemporary selections had good company.

The design

Rockwell's finishes set a strong tone, so we chose pieces that would complement them. Hardwood and blackened steel echo the existing materials, while slate-blue upholstery, cream wool rugs, and tan leather cool the palette down.

Furniture groupings were situated for guests to settle in. Black-and-white photographs, hung unframed on cables from the hotel's picture rails, tie the vignettes together, floating off the wall to add another layer of depth and texture.
