For NYCxDesign, we partnered with Shinola on a complete apartment inside the WantedDesign show in Chelsea. Visitors could walk from entry to dining room to den and find Shinola's goods at home among furniture by independent makers.

The idea

Shinola makes watches, leather goods and stationery in Detroit. Rather than set them on shelves, we wanted fairgoers to discover each piece where it belongs: a watch resting on a side table tray, notebooks between granite bookends, a candle lit beside a stone vase.

The design

The space was an open loft with white-painted brick and timber floors, so the furniture itself is what defines and creates each room. In the dining area, we chose a walnut table with black chairs to anchor it as the centerpiece, arched mirrors doubled the light and added depth, and a marquetry credenza brought pattern to the far wall.

Every object came from our community of independent design studios, or from Shinola, styled together so the rooms read as a home. Fresh tropical stems add the color that wood, leather and steel hold back.
