We asked studios from our community to create a one-of-a-kind holiday ornament. Each worked in its own design language and materials, so every piece became a miniature portrait of the people who made it.

Holiday ornaments including a red paper star by Noble Goods, a blue glass squiggle by Another Human and an embroidered shirt by Bode

The ornaments

Richard Clarkson set a brass Saturn in orbit, Crump & Kwash striped a bell, Another Human looped blue glass into a squiggle, and Bode embroidered a tiny shirt. Each piece speaks the language of the brand behind it.

With Shinola

This project was done in collaboration with Shinola, which builds watches, bicycles and leather goods in Detroit. Because the brand is rooted there, the proceeds stayed close to home: every piece was auctioned, and all the money raised went to MOCAD, the city's contemporary art museum.

The ornaments hung on trees and in display cases inside Shinola stores, from the TriBeCa flagship to Los Angeles and Miami. Events in New York and during Art Basel showcased work by independent artists and designers, drawing hundreds of guests and raising thousands of dollars for a great cause.

The evening

To launch the collaboration, we lit the tree at the TriBeCa Shinola store. Makers, collectors and friends of our studio gathered while each ornament sat on display.
